I was having a conversation with an elder and she mentioned some rituals that if not done as per rules, would attract divine punishment. At her age, she is probably right because she has lived through an era where they largely relied on customs to solve the moral, social, hygiene and health problems prevalent in their way of life. Belief in divine punishment or fear of God’s wrath was an effective way to make these customs popular in the masses in those times.
Unfortunately, over the years along with the customs, this fear of God’s wrath has also passed down the generations. Today in the Gujarati customs, we have a lot of do’s and don’ts in order to avoid God’s wrath. Let not fear drive faith. God is all merciful and can never punish us. God is love and all that is positive. A negative consequence can NEVER emanate from the all-powerful and the all-pervading.
Let us cleanse our customs of all that is negative including superstitions that have a negative assumption or consequence. Let us try to understand the source and essence of what we practice. Let us only carry forward all that is as radiant as love and as positive as life.
The next time we do something let it be for the love of God. Let us rid fear from our culture.
